Deep in the bayou, in the middle of a summer night, the juke joint comes alive.
Come ‘round the back door and join “Honey Biscuits” and her band as they bring Black American folklore to life through song in The Yellowroot: A Juke Joint Cabaret, created by Ashli St. Armant.
Commissioned by Chandler Center for the Arts and UCSD ArtPower, The Yellowroot is an interactive, theatrical music experience infused with jazz and soul. Treasured stories like “Annie Christmas” and captivating myths like “Mami Wata” are woven together by a common narrative, bringing the heartbeat back to these reimagined tales.
Come and be transported as Ashli St. Armant and her dream team of jazz artists commune with the audience, make a ruckus, and hunker down. A storm is coming.
