Eight-week Selective Elective program introduces students to careers in the performing arts through hands-on learning.

Chandler Center for the Arts (CCA) is launching a new pilot arts education program designed to introduce elementary students to the many career opportunities behind the curtain. Beginning July 29, the "Selective Elective" program will provide Conley Elementary School fifth and sixth grade students with an engaging, eight-week exploration of the performing arts industry, with classes held each Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. through September 16. Supported in part by Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, CCA is partnering with ArtsEd West who will serve as facilitators.

Unlike traditional arts education programs focused solely on performance, Chandler Center for the Arts' "Selective Elective" introduces students to the full ecosystem of a performing arts center. Through interactive, hands-on lessons, students will explore careers in theater, music, production, marketing, public relations, arts administration, box office operations, fundraising, and more. Each weekly session focuses on a different topic, giving students an opportunity to discover new interests while developing creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Throughout the program, students will apply what they learn by planning their own performing arts event, culminating in a final presentation that showcases everything from artistic programming and stage design to marketing strategies and ticket pricing.

"This program opens students' eyes to the incredible variety of careers that make live performances possible," said Michelle Mac Lennan, General Manager of Chandler Center for the Arts. "Whether they dream of performing on stage, designing lighting, producing events, creating marketing campaigns, or leading an arts organization, we want students to see that there is a place for their talents in the arts."

Designed for students with or without previous arts experience, the curriculum encourages participants to think creatively while building confidence and collaboration skills. Every class combines interactive learning, real-world examples, and hands-on activities that connect classroom concepts with professional arts careers.

"Selective Elective" reflects Chandler Center for the Arts' ongoing commitment to expanding arts education opportunities for young people and inspiring the next generation of artists, creators, and community leaders.
