Chandler, AZ — The Chandler Cultural Foundation has welcomed Paula Johnson Hutchinson and Erika Thrower to its Board of Directors following their appointment by Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke and approval by the Chandler Cultural Foundation Board of Directors.
The two community leaders bring diverse experience in education, advocacy, and civic engagement that will help advance the Foundation's mission of enriching the community through the arts. Both will serve on the Chandler Cultural Foundation's Special Event Committee, which includes planning and organizing this year's Center Stage Gala, held October 17, 2026.
"Paula and Erika each bring a strong commitment to community and a desire to make a difference," said Julia Marreel, Chair of the Chandler Cultural Foundation. "Paula has spent her career creating opportunities for others through education and community engagement, while Erika's professional experience and leadership will be a valuable addition to our Board. We are excited to welcome them and look forward to the contributions they will make to the Foundation and the community we serve."
Paula Johnson Hutchinson is the Founder and CEO of Empowered Youth Academy, where she develops programs that encourage reading, storytelling and leadership for children, teens and adults. A two-time Teacher of the Year and current doctoral student in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Phoenix, she has dedicated her career to helping students succeed in the classroom and beyond.
Throughout her 24-year career as an educator, Paula has worked to connect schools, families and community organizations through the arts and meaningful learning experiences. She believes the arts bring people together, build understanding and create opportunities for learning that extend beyond the classroom.
She is currently a middle school teacher at Legacy Traditional School (N. Phoenix Campus), working primarily with underserved students.
A resident of Chandler in Brooks Ranch for nine years, Paula says, "I love living in Chandler. It's a diverse, welcoming community with wonderful opportunities in the arts. I look forward to serving on the Board and bringing together my passion for education and the arts to help people connect, learn and grow."
Erika Thrower joins the Chandler Cultural Foundation Board with a background in mental health, community involvement and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. A Chandler resident for 15 years, she is a licensed professional counselor with a private practice, Ayé Counseling and Consulting, specializing in trauma recovery and emotional regulation for adolescents and adults. She earned a bachelor's degree in Justice Studies from Arizona State University and a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Argosy University.
In addition to her counseling practice, Erika is an active member of the Valley's music community as a DJ, performing at venues including Valley Bar, Crescent Ballroom and Latha.
"I've called Chandler home for 15 years, and I'm excited to become even more involved in the community through something I'm passionate about," said Erika. "Music, theater and the arts have always been an important part of my life, and I look forward to working with the Foundation to create experiences that bring people together and strengthen our community."
